Boilers, or hydronic heating systems, work on the basic principle of heating water and using that water to distribute heat through a given space. Some systems use hot water to distribute heat while others may use steam. The efficiency of hydronic systems equally vary, ranging 80% efficient to over 90%. The boiler configuration used on a project is typically defined by the fuel type available in addition to the existing boiler system layout and design. Boilers are desirable in many applications, typically large buildings or in medical facilities such as hospitals. The benefit from boiler systems is that they typically add humidity to a space.This not only helps retain heat but is also healthier for you.
Steam boilers are not indifferent from their conventional counterparts in that it uses water to distribute heat through a space. The variance is as the name implies, steam boilers will create steam to circulate heat throughout the heating system. Utilizing gravity, once the steam condenses, the water simply flows back to the boiler and the process starts again.
Oil and Gas Boilers
Conventional boilers simply heat water and then distribute that water using pumps to the various areas in a space, generally run through baseboard systems or radiators. Unlike their steam counterparts, conventional boilers will use a series of pumps and control valves to regulate heat through the various rooms within a space. Typically, conventional boilers will run at approximately 80% efficiency.
Condensing boilers are unique in that they use the heat from the exhaust created to reheat the colder water returning to the boiler. Essentially it preheats the water using the exhaust produced from heating the water inside the boiler. This enables condensing boilers to be more efficient. In some cases 95% efficient compared to their conventional counterparts that are typically rated around 80%
